Join union members and leaders from all over the country for a one-of-a-kind union training and labor education event in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields!

Camp Solidarity is a one-of-a-kind union training event hosted by the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in historic Matewan, West Virginia. With the help of the Museum’s team and special guests, we’re going to bulk up our skills in building strong unions with engaged membership, and educate ourselves about labor history in the place (on the very street!) where one of the most significant battles over unionism in the U.S took place.

Attendees will:

  • Gain critical skills to make your union more effective! Camp Solidarity will offer a wide range of interactive workshops aimed at local and state level union members and leaders. These classes will offer strategies and tactics that are immediately applicable and can be implemented upon your return home.

  • Learn labor history! Camp Solidarity will be held in the UMWA-owned Cecil E. Roberts building, home of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum, in historic Matewan, WV. There will be presentations on the Mine Wars as well as opportunities for guided tours of our museum.

  • Meet, network, and learn with other union members and leaders! There will be union members from various industries and locations in attendance. Camp Solidarity is an excellent opportunity to network, plan, and strategize with union members from all over the country.

The original Camp Solidarity was a special place created during the historic 1989-1990 strike against Pittston Coal. By choosing this name, we hope to honor the original camp and build solidarity in today's labor movement.

We have secured a block of cabins for our Camp Solidarity attendees at the Devil’s Backbone Adventure Resort just a few short miles from the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. These rustic cabins, situated adjacent to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, offer modern amenities including Wifi, smart TVs, and a bar and restaurant on site.
